How do Hart Dairy cows stay cool in the summer heat? We put a second line on the irrigators with misters on it specifically to keep cows cool and to allow them to continue to graze.
If you’ve ever been to Georgia in the summertime, you know it’s hot!
For that reason, we are often asked how our cows stay cool during the hottest months of the year. We do more than simply providing them with plenty of drinking water to ensure they stay hydrated.
The pictured contraption is a part of our irrigation system.
But here’s the coolest part (pun intended): we put a second line on the irrigators with misters on it specifically to keep cows cool and to allow them to continue to graze.
The irrigators ‘walk’ forward at a very slow pace so that the cows can continue to graze across the field throughout the day instead of being stuck on the same patch of grass all day long.
Anytime it’s over 75 degrees, we turn them on to limit heat stress.
Every irrigator on the farm has a mister system, this way the cows can be rotated throughout the entire farm all summer long. ⠀
How cool is that?!
